Reading a CQC rating

An inspection asks five questions of a service — is it safe, is it effective, is it caring, is it responsive, is it well-led — and the single word most people see is a summary of those five. The summary is where the useful detail goes missing. A care home rated "Requires improvement" because it is not safe and one rated the same because its management is thin are not the same problem, and only the five answers tell them apart.

Look at the date as hard as the word. A rating published in 2019 describes a service as it was then, under whatever management it had then — and services change hands. A rating marked as inherited is not about that place at all: it comes from the organisation running it, which is a real judgement but a different one.

The absence of a rating is the most misread thing here. A newly registered service has not been inspected yet, and some kinds of service are not rated at all. About thirty-five thousand of the fifty-seven thousand regulated locations carry a published rating — so "not yet rated" is common, and it is shown as itself rather than folded in with the bad ones.

For a chain, the figure that matters is the worst one. A provider running two hundred homes with one rated inadequate has a problem that an average would hide, which is why a company page here shows the worst rating among everything that provider runs.
