The register of charities

Every charity in England and Wales, from the Charity Commission — including the ones that have been removed from it, which is the half an appeal quoting an old number depends on you not checking.

Reading the register of charities

Britain has had a public register of charities since 1960, and it answers a question people ask at exactly the wrong moment: somebody is standing in front of them with a collecting tin, or an email has arrived after a disaster. A registered charity number is checkable in seconds, and a number that returns nothing — or returns a different name — is the whole answer.

The part that is usually missing is the past tense. Two hundred thousand charities have been removed from the register, and a removed charity does not take its letterheads back. So both halves are shown here, and a removed charity says so on its own line rather than quietly not appearing.

Thirty thousand of these are charitable companies, filing at Companies House as well as with the Commission. The charity register records the company number itself, which is why the link between the two here is exact rather than a guess from names — and why a company page can tell you it is a charity, and whether it still is.

The Commission regulates England and Wales, and nothing else. A Scottish charity is registered with OSCR and a Northern Irish one with the Charity Commission for Northern Ireland, on separate registers with their own numbers. Not finding one here says nothing about it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check whether a charity is genuine?
Ask for its registered charity number and look it up. Every charity in England and Wales with an income over £5,000 must be registered, and the register records the number, the name, the address and what the charity says it does. A number that returns nothing, or returns a different name from the one on the appeal, is the answer.
What does it mean when a charity has been removed from the register?
That it no longer exists as a registered charity — most often because it wound up, merged with another, or fell below the income threshold, and occasionally because the Commission removed it. Removal is not itself a finding of wrongdoing. It does mean that an appeal still quoting that number today is quoting a charity that is not on the register, which is why the removed half of the register is shown here rather than hidden.
Why do some charities have a company number too?
Because they are charitable companies: incorporated at Companies House and registered with the Charity Commission, so they appear on both registers and file with both. The charity register records the company number itself, which is how a company page here can say a company is a registered charity without guessing from the name. A charitable incorporated organisation (CIO) is the newer alternative — incorporated, but only with the Commission, so it has no company number.
What is the income figure?
The gross income the charity reported for its most recent completed financial year, as filed with the Commission. It is not this year’s income and it is not audited by us. A charity that has never filed shows nothing, which for a newly registered charity is normal and for an old one is worth asking about.
Does this cover Scotland and Northern Ireland?
No. The Charity Commission regulates England and Wales only. Scottish charities are registered with OSCR and Northern Irish charities with the Charity Commission for Northern Ireland, on separate registers with their own numbers — so a Scottish charity will not be found here, and its absence means nothing about it.
